Post 1 of Day 3
Today was an awesome day at the Gospel Feeding Center and Good News Academy. We were sad not to see the children at the orphanage today, but were so privileged to visit a rural area. Just the drive there was an education, as we passed shacks and little mud huts. Just before we got to the school we passed the witch doctor’s compound where he has several mud huts for his four wives and twenty-five children. Two of his wives have converted from Islam and he allows them and their children to attend the church and school.
When we arrived, the children were at chapel, singing beautifully in their little open air building. While Bobby (the missionary) gave us a tour of the feeding center and school, we listened to the children singing song after song. It was absolutely beautiful! Truly the African Children’s Choir! They were in a choir contest on Monday, and came in 4th in the nation.
After our tour we went to chapel. The children recited several verses of scripture for us, and then Bobby gave a little devotional about David and Goliath. When that was over, Kelly and Sue went to help with the 3-5 years in their class until lunch, while Katie Sue and Betsy helped the ladies make lunch in the feeding center. The Thielman team made a picture of the human body and labeled all the parts (at least the appropriate ones), and then shared them with the class. Then they taught them to sing “Wheels on the Bus”. The Linn team had an education on outdoor cooking for 200. Wow! We separated “green grams” for lunch tomorrow, and were taught how to make greens using “sukomaweeki”. Katie Sue had the cook volunteer to work in her orphanage one day, so it was a very productive time (smile).
After we had the opportunity to serve them all beans and maize for lunch, we ate a lovely lunch with the kitchen helpers. It was the best food we’ve had since we left home. Truly Kenyan food - fresh everything. Sue and Kelly got to help do dishes for 200 in the yard, while Katie Sue and Betsy hung out in the 2nd grade class. The day ended way too soon, when the Bechtels came to get us at 2:15. We were incredibly sad to leave our new friends. We do hope to get to join them for a Kenyan church service on Sunday if we can figure out how to get there. . . Did we mention that Kabibi told Betsy she could take her 8 month old baby girl Georgina home? For the balance of the day’s adventure, keep reading: part 2 below.
sounds like an amazing day
